The following short writing exercise is designed to help you think about what things you could get out of this workshop that are valuable to you personally. Writing this out carefully can help making it easier for you to pick up on the things that are relevant to you and that you might want to try out in the future.

This exercise is designed to help deepen your understanding of the principles we just discussed, and to think about how you can apply them to your own learning without making things too difficult.

1. Please select two of the principles we discussed that interest / stood out to you most.

3. What are different ways of trying to implement these principles in your studying? For each principle, please describe:

a) how you can implement it in your own studying; and

b) how this can create the benefits you identified in the previous step.

This exercise is about applying the break framework to a situations that actually happened to you. The goal is to practice applying the framework to your own experience so that it will be easier to do it automatically and intuitively in the future.

Applying to an old unsuccessful break scenario

Please think back to an actual break that you took that you consider not to have worked out very well. Perhaps the break did not help you feel ready for what came next, made it harder to return to studying, or simply did not have the effect you hoped for. If you cannot think of a real break, try to come up with an example of what an unsuccessful break might look like for you.

Then follow the steps below:

2. Describe the scenario: What were the pre- and post-break tasks? How about your states before and after the break? What did the break look like?

3. What did not work well?

Your earlier reflections

1. Look back at what you wrote previously. You can find your previous responses in the toggle above. What is the major take away from the first part of the workshop? What do you believe would benefit you most if you implemented it in your own studying? Then look back and what you wrote about the second part: What do you believe would benefit you most if you implemented it in your own studying?

Take a moment to recap; no written response is needed here.

2. Which two break principles will you apply, and how? Your earlier choices are selected automatically; you can change them below. Write one If [condition], then [behaviour] plan for each principle. Then briefly visualise how you will put both plans into practice.

Where will you study? What will you see and hear? How will you feel? Imagine the cue for each plan, what you will do during your break, and how you will return to studying.

3. Imagine an upcoming study session ⇒ Apply the break framework to it:

1. Pick a realistic task that you might work on.

2. What state will help you do this easily?

3. Assume your state before the break is distracted, tired, and frustrated. How could you design your break to move towards this better state?
